The University of Manchester dates back to 1824. It is the birthplace of many discoveries which have had a major impact on society including the development of the first modern computer, the splitting of the atom by Rutherford, the first degree in nursing and the birth of modern economics and medical ethics. Twenty-five Nobel Laureates have worked at the University, with three currently on staff. The University is one of the most popular universities in the UK, attracting students from all backgrounds. It is ranked 38th in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Rankings of World Universities and is third for research power in the UK. Its public places include the Manchester Museum, the Whitworth Art Gallery, the John Rylands Library (which houses the oldest extant manuscript of the New Testament) and the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre.
